Overview of solid waste management in Thailand

The ever increasing amount of solid waste generation has created disposal problems for many developing countries and Thailand is no exeption. The amount of solid waste generated in 1992 was about 25,940 ton per day which increased 39,827 ton per day in 1996. This was an increase of 54% over five years. Most of the waste is disposed by open dumping on land and burning on the local authorities. In order to improve the practice of solid waste management, the Government of Thailand has established work plans to improve the solid waste management system ill the Development Work Plan for Solid waste, and Hazardous Waste Notification No. 5 (1997-2001). Solid waste management awareness programs have been developed and disseminated to the public through public media. Moreover, reuse and recycling have been practiced to minimize the amount of waste.
