Peatland Rehabilitation Efforts in North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest

The North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest (NSPSF) in Northwest Selangor, Peninsula Malaysia, has 81,304 hectares of land that was encroached and cleared for agriculture from 1998 to 2008. The Selangor State Forestry Department evicted illegal settlers in 2008 and reclaimed the lands. However, drainage canals, land clearing, and agricultural activities have dried out the peat soil and removed natural vegetation. The Global Environment Centre and the Selangor State Forestry Department collaborated to develop a rehabilitation plan as part of the Integrated Management Plan for 2014-2023 (IMP-NSPSF). The Selangor State Government approved the plan in December 2014, and a Tripartite Smart Partnership between government, private sector, and local community is crucial for implementing the proposed activities. Over the years, the degraded areas have seen significant improvements, thanks to the collective efforts of government departments, NGOs/GEC, corporate partners, volunteers, and local community members.
