Fire has caused considerable losses in the forest plantation area of Jambi Province, Sumatra. Studies on fire control effectiveness were carried out in this area, where the main plantation species is Acacia mangium, and good management is practised by PT Wirakarya Sakti (a concessionaire). Even though fire is a potential threat to the plantation area because of a high fuel presence, there has been no wildfire in the plantations, although several fires have occurred on land clearing areas. The fire control system developed by the company includes organization, communication, transportation, early warning, detection and a suppression system. The system is well maintained and it is a good example of fire control management in forest plantation areas in Indonesia.
