Comparison of Imperata control by manual, chemical, and mechanical methods for smallholder rubber farming systems

This paper was presented at the Symposium in Weed Science held on 10-12 Apr. 1984 at Bogor, Indonesia. In an area dominated by Imperata in S. Sumatra, the land was cleared by using 2.16 kg glyphosate/ha, 11.1 kg dalapon followed by 7.4 kg dalapon/ha or by traditional clearing methods. Upland rice was then strip-sown, dibble sown or dead stubble was cultivated and rice direct sown. In a 2nd experiment on a red yellow podzolic soil, plots were cleared by cutting and burning with hand hoeing, or by 2.2 kg glyphosate/ha with zero tillage, or by 2.2 kg glyphosate/ha with minimum tillage or by 2 ploughings and 2 harrowings. Rubber was planted 4 or 6 weeks after clearing and intercropped with maize, upland rice, groundnuts and Vigna unguiculata. The soil was analysed before and after land clearance. From both experiments there was apparently no short-term difference between mechanical clearance or minimum or zero tillage. In the 2nd experiment there were no significant effects on soil fertility and structure for the various treatments. The main advantage of minimum and zero tillage was economic.
