With over 200 mill, people, Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of population behind China, India, and the U.S. It has the third largest area of remaining tropical forest in the world behind Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to a recent national forest inventory, 113 mill, ha of Indonesia’s 191 mill, ha land area is forest (GOI/FAO 1996). Of this total, 50 mill, ha are classified as “production” or “limited production” forest, 23 mill, ha are classified as “conversion forest”, and 40 mill, ha are classified as “protection” and “conservation” forest (GOI/FAO 1996). The island with the largest area of forest is Kalimantan (35 mill, ha), followed by Irian Jaya (30 mill, ha), Sumatra (19 mill, ha), and Sulawesi (7 mill, ha) (Map 22.1; GOI/FAO 1996).
