A total of 26 papers were presented and are given in four sections: Workshop opening and regional overview (including papers on the use of fire in land management, shifting cultivation and fire, and atmospheric issues for fire management); Fire management issues in eastern Indonesia (14 papers); Fire management issues in northern Australia (5 papers); and Institutional linkages and cooperative approaches (3 papers). Two breakaway sessions were also incorporated and are summarised (in both English and Indonesian), with participants allocated to one of five working groups. Session 1 was a general discussion defining regional fire management issues, while session 2 focused on specific regional issues (development of fire monitoring approaches including remote sensing; cultural issues, tenure, community awareness and education; ecological research issues; agricultural and forestry research issues; and sectoral links and collaborations). A list of participants is included.
