Based on a study of the Buhid Mangyan in the uplands of Mindoro Island in the Philippines, examines the varying response of hill peoples to the process of incorporation, describing sources of susceptibility and resistance to social change. In particular, attention is given to the reactions of a community orientated to slash-and-burn agriculture to the penetration of the market economy and to the domination of a centralized form of government.-from WAERSA
