Causes of tropical forest degradation, especially logging, are outlined, and silvicultural practices for rehabilitation and sustainable management of these forests are noted. Brief descriptions are given of 2 two case studies (CIFOR/Japan Project): Evaluation of forest harvesting and fire impacts on the forest ecosystem and development of methods to rehabilitate logged-over forest and degraded lands in Indonesia (in partnership with Universitas Mulawarman); and Evaluation of forest harvesting impacts on forest ecosystems and rehabilitation methods of logged-over forest and degraded lands in Peru (in partnership with Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agraria).
