A survey was conducted of changes (from 1984 to 1989) in food production, tree planting, income, education and urban relations in the areas of Pamansalan, Diwan and Dipolog city, Philippines. Changes were analysed in relation to participation or non-participation of survey respondents in activities at an agroforestry training centre at Dipolog, funded by the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement-International Development Body (OISCA-IDB). Agricultural activities at the centre (such as classes for farmers, fertilizer loans without interest and an agricultural cooperative) significantly helped to raise income. Changes noted were: (1) food production was not increased in 69% of respondents, and the farming system remained the same; (2) slash and burn agriculture with a shorter fallow period was implemented; (3) tree planting was carried out by 84% of respondents - although only three to eight seedlings were planted by each family; (4) income was increased gradually by work in the centre or private reforestation projects; (5) community activities, educational attainment and urban relations were enhanced by the activities of the centre, and they were recognized by more than 90% of respondents.
