Subsistence agricultural economies of Lua’ and Karen hill farmers, Mae Sariang district, northwestern Thailand

A full account of the agriculture of two typical hill tribe villages, of northern Thailand (population 233 and 183). First an illustrated account of the annual cycle of activities is given. This includes tools, choice of site, land preparation, burning, erosion control, labour, planting crops, weeding, pest control and harvest on swidden fields, preparation and transplanting on irrigated fields, associated gardening, animal production and hunting. Based on detailed records, mean swidden rice yields are calculated. Credit, debt, and household population regulation are discussed.-T.Young
