In 2019 Poland will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Krakow Mining and Metallurgical Academy- The leading university of engineering education for mining industry of the country. The reputed coal mining country in Europe, Poland is at the front burner in the world economy. Currently the country is the world's fi rst producer of silver, sixth producer of copper and eighth producer of bituminous coal (fi rst in Europe). The Polish mining industry is dozens of underground mines and hundreds of open casts. Such success would be unachievable without a mighty scientifi c and education potential in the fi eld of mining. Highly appreciated today are mining engineers qualifi ed in mineral extraction using smart" machine and capable to reclaim disturbed lands after mining completion. Mining engineers are trained at the Academy's Faculty of Mining. Since 1991 the Faculty has launched education in a few new areas: management and marketing; construction; ecological engineering. Introduction of training in marine mining is under preparation. As a consequence of structural transformation, the number of students at the Faculty of Mining and Geoengineering has grown from 846 men in 1991 to 3770 men in 2009. The expansion of the range of specialties resulted in the change in the name of the faculty into Mining and Geoengineering. Up to 25 % of the graduates of the Faculty are women. Considerable part of the trainees is composed by students from foreign countries, mainly, from Vietnam, Mongolia and China. During the recent governmental accreditation, the Faculty's Chair of Mining and Geology got summa cum laude-the highest score in the Poland system of accreditation. The modern engineering education systems lively introduce the latest achievements in the area of information technologies, including attempts of total virtualization. Education system at the Krakow Mining and Metallurgical Academy follows the same way gradually, which is confi rmed by new areas of expertise and specialties.
